General Information of Musical
Category
Musical is divided into three categories. The first one is "Broadway Musical" as you may know, all theaters are in the Theater District near Broadway in Midtown which usually have more than 500 seats, in terms of its size, bigger. The second category is "Off Broadway". You can imagine by its name, this category shows that most of those theaters are away from (=off) Broadway and provides rather avant-garde or experimental programs in mostly 100-499 seats big theaters. The third one is "Off-Off Broadway". The category started because "Off Broadway" became famous and bigger then lost their original purpose, "Not stick to the recognition from the public". Mostly the theater has less than 100 seats and sometimes performed in non-theater spaces.
The Tony Awards
The Tony Awards will be given annual top new commer performance in the beginning of June. That is to say, it is similar to The Academy Award for the films. The award will be broadcasted to the whole United States.
The Obie Award
The Obie Award is similar award as the Tony Awards. It was started by the magazine, "Voice" to evaluate Off Broadway parformance.
General Rule
No dress code but it would be recommended to be dressed in rather semi-formal style. No video nor photo. No drink nor foods inside. You need to check in the big luggage at the front.
Ticket
If you watch the specific one, you should better to reserve in advance and the internet ticketting is avairable. Only you should do is to go to "Will Call" window to receive your ticket. But remember to bring your ID. TKTS (in TimesSquare) can provide you the cheaper tickets.
Off Broadway Theater, Off-Off Broadway Theater
Broadway Theaters
The recognition of the name "musical" for most of the people is still limited to "On Broadway Musical" playing at the theaters concentrated around Times Square or Theater District. Its history had begun around 1927 with "Showboard". "West Side Story" or "Cats" had established musical's recognition bigger, and recently, the films featuring the same title also contributed that accelerate its popularity much.
